libtiff tiffcrop Utility Crashes or Allows Further Exploitation

published 11 months ago
Summary

The libtiff tiffcrop utility is vulnerable to a crash or further exploitation when processing a specially crafted file. This issue matters because an attacker could trick a user into running tiffcrop on a malicious file. To protect against this, update to the latest version of libtiff or use a secure alternative to process TIFF files.

libtiff's tiffcrop utility has a `uint32_t` underflow that can lead to out of bounds read and write. An attacker who supplies a crafted file to tiffcrop (likely via tricking a user to run tiffcrop on it with certain parameters) could cause a crash or in some cases, further exploitation.
