Serv-U Allows Malicious Code Execution as Privileged Account

CVE-2025-40539
Summary

A weakness in Serv-U allows an attacker to run any code with administrative privileges, which could lead to unauthorized changes or data theft. This is most concerning for Windows users, as many Serv-U services run under less-privileged accounts by default, making it easier to exploit. To mitigate this risk, ensure all Serv-U services are running under a highly restricted, non-administrative account.

This issue requires administrative privileges to abuse. On Windows deployments, the risk is scored as a medium because services frequently run under less-privileged service accounts by default.
