CVE-2026-74040: Wazuh manager can be taken over via worker file overwrite

CVE-2026-74040 · published 2 days ago
Summary

Wazuh manager versions from 3.9.0 up to 4.14.7 allow a cluster worker to replace important configuration files on the master server. If an attacker controls a worker, they can change these files and run code with full system privileges on the manager and all connected agents. Update to the latest Wazuh manager version or apply the vendor's patch to stop this behavior.

What to do
  • Update wazuh wazuh-manager to version 4.14.8 or later.

Original advisory text
Wazuh 3.9.0 before 4.14.8 Arbitrary File Overwrite RCE via process_files_from_worker
Wazuh versions from 3.9.0 before 4.14.8 contain an arbitrary file overwrite vulnerability in MasterHandler.process_files_from_worker allowing a cluster worker to overwrite protected master files. Attackers controlling a worker can use a trailing-slash basename bypass and missing extra_valid enforcement to overwrite ossec.conf and agent.conf, achieving root remote code execution across the manager and every agent.
