CVE-2026-50550: Snipe-IT allows privileged user to disable superadmin 2FA

CVE-2026-50550 · published 2 months ago
Summary

In Snipe-IT versions before 8.5.0, anyone who can edit other users could reset the two‑factor authentication settings of a superadmin, effectively turning off that extra security layer. This means an attacker who gains such editing rights could compromise the strongest account without needing the original 2FA code. Upgrade to version 8.5.0 or later to close the gap and limit user‑editing permissions to trusted individuals.

What to do
  • Update snipe snipe-it to version 8.5.0.
  • Update snipeitapp snipe-it to version 8.5.0 or later.

Original advisory text
Snipe-IT: 2FA reset privilege bypass
Snipe-IT is an IT asset/license management system. Prior to 8.5.0, a user who can edit other users can reset a superadmin's two-factor authentication through app/Http/Controllers/Api/UsersController.php postTwoFactorReset(). The endpoint authorizes update access but does not enforce canEditAuthFields before clearing two_factor_secret and two_factor_enrolled. This issue is fixed in version 8.5.0.
