CVE-2023-45316: Mattermost Playbooks endpoint can be tricked into forged requests

CVE-2023-45316 · published 2 years ago
Summary

The Playbooks feature in Mattermost accepts a value that should be a run ID, but it does not check whether the value contains directory‑traversal characters. An attacker can craft a request that points to a different internal URL, causing the system to perform actions on behalf of an authenticated user (a cross‑site request forgery). Update Mattermost to the latest version or apply the vendor’s recommended fix and ensure that only trusted users can access the Playbooks API.

What to do

The CVE record does not list a fixed version. Check the vendor's site or the advisory links below - a fix may already be released.

Original advisory text
Reflected client side path traversal leading to CSRF in Playbooks
Mattermost fails to validate if a relative path is passed in /plugins/playbooks/api/v0/telemetry/run/<telem_run_id> as a telemetry run ID, allowing an attacker to use a path traversal payload that points to a different endpoint leading to a CSRF attack.
