CVE-2017-16544: BusyBox autocomplete can run terminal escape codes

CVE-2017-16544 · published 8 years ago
Summary

The tab‑completion feature in BusyBox (up to version 1.27.2) can display file names without cleaning them first. If a file name contains special terminal commands, those commands may be executed when shown, potentially allowing an attacker to run code or change files. Update BusyBox to a newer version or disable the autocomplete feature until the fix is applied.

In the add_match function in libbb/lineedit.c in BusyBox through 1.27.2, the tab autocomplete feature of the shell, used to get a list of filenames in a directory, does not sanitize filenames and results in executing any escape sequence in the terminal.
