CVE-2017-15649: Linux kernel before 4.13.6 lets local user increase privileges

CVE-2017-15649 · published 9 years ago
Summary

The Linux kernel version prior to 4.13.6 contains a flaw in its packet handling code that can be triggered by a local user making specially crafted system calls. This race condition can cause the system to free memory too early, allowing the attacker to gain higher privileges on the machine. Update the kernel to version 4.13.6 or later to close the gap.

net/packet/af_packet.c in the Linux kernel before 4.13.6 allows local users to gain privileges via crafted system calls that trigger mishandling of packet_fanout data structures, because of a race condition (involving fanout_add and packet_do_bind) that leads to a use-after-free, a different vulnerability than CVE-2017-6346.
