CVE-2015-4000: OpenSSL and related systems allow TLS downgrade attack

CVE-2015-4000 · published 11 years ago
Summary

The TLS encryption used by OpenSSL, Ubuntu Linux, HP-UX, IBM Content Manager and JRockit can be tricked into using weaker export‑grade keys when a man-in-the-middle changes the negotiation messages. This lets an attacker weaken the security of the connection and potentially read or alter data. Update the software to the latest version or disable export‑grade cipher suites to prevent the downgrade.

The TLS protocol 1.2 and earlier, when a DHE_EXPORT ciphersuite is enabled on a server but not on a client, does not properly convey a DHE_EXPORT choice, which allows man-in-the-middle attackers to conduct cipher-downgrade attacks by rewriting a ClientHello with DHE replaced by DHE_EXPORT and then rewriting a ServerHello with DHE_EXPORT replaced by DHE, aka the "Logjam" issue.
