CVE-2011-1573: Linux kernel SCTP can crash from crafted packets

CVE-2011-1573 · published 14 years ago
Summary

The Linux kernel (versions before 2.6.34) mishandles certain SCTP network messages when specific features are turned on, ignoring extra padding bytes. This mistake can cause the system to stop responding or crash if an attacker sends specially crafted data. Update the kernel to a version newer than 2.6.34 or apply the available patch to prevent the crash.

What to do
  • Update linux linux_kernel to version 2.6.34 or later.

net/sctp/sm_make_chunk.c in the Linux kernel before 2.6.34, when addip_enable and auth_enable are used, does not consider the amount of zero padding during calculation of chunk lengths for (1) INIT and (2) INIT ACK chunks, which allows remote attackers to cause a denial of service (OOPS) via crafted packet data.
