CVE-2011-1140: Wireshark can crash when processing malicious SMB or CLDAP packets

CVE-2011-1140 · published 15 years ago
Summary

Versions of Wireshark packaged for Debian that include 1.0.x, 1.2.0-1.2.14, or 1.4.0-1.4.3 may stop working if they receive specially crafted network data over SMB or connection-less LDAP. The problem causes the program to get stuck in a loop and become unresponsive, effectively a denial of service. Upgrade to a newer Wireshark release or apply the provided security patch, and avoid analyzing network captures from untrusted sources until the update is applied.

What to do
  • Update debian wireshark to version 1.4.4-1.

Multiple stack consumption vulnerabilities in the dissect_ms_compressed_string and dissect_mscldap_string functions in Wireshark 1.0.x, 1.2.0 through 1.2.14, and 1.4.0 through 1.4.3 allow remote attackers to cause a denial of service (infinite recursion) via a crafted (1) SMB or (2) Connection-less LDAP (CLDAP) packet.
