CVE-2008-2372: Linux kernel can be slowed down by memory exhaustion

CVE-2008-2372 · published 18 years ago
Summary

The Linux kernel versions 2.6.24 and 2.6.25 (up to 2.6.25.8) can let a local user consume large amounts of memory by repeatedly calling a specific function. This can cause the system to run out of memory and become unresponsive. Update the kernel to a newer version or apply the provided patches to stop the uncontrolled memory allocation.

The Linux kernel 2.6.24 and 2.6.25 before 2.6.25.9 allows local users to cause a denial of service (memory consumption) via a large number of calls to the get_user_pages function, which lacks a ZERO_PAGE optimization and results in allocation of "useless newly zeroed pages."
